DINAJPUR — A 26-year-old Chinese engineer has traveled from Jiangsu province to a village in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila to marry a Bangladeshi woman he met about a year ago through a video chat app, the families said.
The man, Yong Song Song, plans to marry Surovi Akter, 19, in Kazipara Shimultala village in Ranipukur union of Biral upazila, according to the families.
After news of the relationship spread, hundreds of curious people gathered at the woman’s home to catch a glimpse of him, locals said.
Yong, a construction engineer, is from China’s Jiangsu province, the families said. His father, Yuan Xiki, has died, and his mother is Liu Fenhong.
The couple met about a year ago through the Hello Talk video chat app, the families said. Surovi is the daughter of Nur Hossain Babu, an auto-rickshaw driver, and homemaker Sathi Akter of Kazipara Shimultala village. Surovi has one sister.
Surovi and Yong said their online friendship grew into a relationship over months of virtual contact. Yong then traveled from China to Bangladesh on Aug. 4 to be with Surovi and arrived at her home on the evening of Sunday, Aug. 10, the families said.
Surovi’s family and local residents said Yong’s identity and documents were being reviewed and that the wedding would go ahead if everything checks out.
