DINAJPUR — Protesters set fire to the home of Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, the former state minister for shipping, in the Dhantala area of Bochaganj upazila on Friday night, officials said. Around the same time, demonstrators also torched the home of Aslam Hossain, the former mayor of Setabganj municipality.
The fires broke out at the two houses around 8 p.m. Friday, officials said. Furniture and other belongings in both homes were destroyed, but no casualties were reported.
The Fire Service responded to the scene and brought the blazes under control, officials said. No one was inside either house when the fires were set, according to reports.
The arson followed the recent online spread of a video in which Chowdhury was seen calling Osman Hadi, a spokesman for Inqilab Mancha, a militant.
Shariful Islam, sub-officer at the Bochaganj Fire Service, said responders reached former mayor Aslam’s home around 8:15 p.m. after receiving a report of the fire. The flames were later contained, he said. Belongings inside the home were destroyed, but no casualties had been reported, he said.
