SHERPUR — Election officials assigned electoral symbols to valid candidates contesting the postponed Sherpur-3 (Sribardi-Jhenaigati) parliamentary by-election, officials said.
The symbols were allocated on Sunday morning, March 15, at the office of the district returning officer by Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, district returning officer and district election officer.
Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Masudur Rahman Masud was allotted the scales symbol. Earlier, Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Mohammad Mahmudul Haque Rubel was given the sheaf-of-paddy symbol, and Mizanur Rahman of the Basad (Marxist) was assigned the scissors symbol.
Although five candidates had been declared valid, two withdrew their nominations — Abu Taleb Mohammad Saifuddin of the Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Aminul Islam Badsha. Three candidates will now contest the seat.
Assistant returning officer and Sribardi upazila election officer Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, assistant returning officer and Jhenaigati upazila election officer Mohammad Zahirul Haque, and leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat were present during the symbol allocation.
A meeting on compliance with the electoral code of conduct was later held with candidates, their workers and supporters, and others involved in the election. Mymensingh divisional regional election officer Shahinur Islam Pramanik attended as chief guest and urged everyone to follow the code of conduct. He sought cooperation in holding a free, fair and impartial election.
The Feb. 12 parliamentary election in Sherpur-3 was canceled following the death of the Jamaat-nominated candidate. The Election Commission later rescheduled voting in the seat for April 9. A referendum will not be held in the seat as it is not necessary, officials said.
