DINAJPUR — A 30-year-old man was found with his throat slashed near his in-laws’ home in Kaharole upazila and later died, police said. Investigators are examining whether he killed himself after attacking his wife and mother-in-law or was murdered.
Subrata Roy, son of Krishnakanta Roy of Hasua village in Rasulpur union of Kaharole upazila, died Sunday, Oct. 5, after the incident at Shankarpur village in Dabor union, police said.
Residents said Roy had married Beauty Rani, daughter of Sonu Ram Roy of Shankarpur, seven years ago. The couple had separated after marital disputes shortly after the wedding, and Beauty Rani had returned to her father’s home, residents said.
Roy continued to visit his in-laws’ home because of his attachment to his wife, residents said. On Sunday around 11 a.m., Roy went to the house. After an argument with his wife and his mother-in-law Monika Rani Roy, he stabbed his wife and then his mother-in-law and left the house, residents said.
Shortly afterward, residents found Roy in a paddy field near the house with his throat cut, they said. Police, alerted via the 999 emergency line, took the bleeding Roy to Kaharole Upazila Health Complex, from where doctors transferred him to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. Roy died on the way to the hospital Sunday afternoon, police said.
“Some local people are saying that after attacking his wife and mother-in-law with a knife, he tried to kill himself by slitting his own throat,” said Mohammad Sohel Rana, officer-in-charge of Kaharole police station. “Whatever people say, we are taking this seriously and investigating. The real circumstances will be established through a thorough investigation.”
The body has been sent to the morgue at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, Rana said. No one had filed a written complaint so far, he said.
The wounded mother-in-law, Monika Rani Roy, has been admitted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, and the wife, Beauty Rani, has been taken into custody at Kaharole police station for questioning, police said.
