KURIGRAM — Police have arrested the main suspect in the gang rape of a young woman who was lured to the area with a promise of marriage, officials said.
The suspect, Md. Jahid Hasan, 28, was arrested in connection with the assault in Kachakata thana area, police said.
According to police, on the night of March 22, around 8 p.m., Jahid Hasan called the 23-year-old victim by phone and brought her to the Anandabazar area of Nageshwari. He then took her to Chor Luchni village in Nageshwari thana area on the promise of marriage.
The next night, around 11 p.m. on March 23, he said he would take her to Dhaka but instead led her to a corn field in the riverside area near Aynal’s ghat by the Dudhkumar River, police said. There, Jahid Hasan, Babu Mia alias Akash, 22, and one other unidentified man took turns raping her, police said.
The attackers fled and left the victim at the scene, police said. As she made her way home, a local resident, Abdus Salam Mia, saw her in the Jubbar Mor area of Nageshwari and informed her family. The next day, on Tuesday, March 24, around 10 a.m., her family rescued her with the help of a local union council member.
A case was filed at Kachakata thana under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Police arrested Jahid in connection with the case.
