KARIMGANJ, Bangladesh — Amid high prices of essential goods throughout Ramadan, J.C. Agro Farm in Kishoreganj has set an unusual example by selling milk at a nominal price. For the past five years, the farm has been standing alongside ordinary people during the holy month of fasting, drawing praise across the district.
The farm, located in Niamatpur Rouha village in Karimganj upazila, sold milk at just 10 taka per kilogram throughout Ramadan in consideration of low-income people, setting a humanitarian example. The farm currently has about 250 cattle, including those being fattened. Of these, 18 dairy cows produce about 100 kilograms of milk a day.
Farm authorities said milk sales began at 11 a.m. each day from the first day of Ramadan. To allow more people to benefit, each customer was limited to one kilogram. On average, 90 to 100 low-income people benefited each day. People came from neighboring villages as well as the local area to collect the milk.
Milk currently sells for 100 to 120 taka per liter in the market. By comparison, getting milk at 10 taka has been a blessing for many families.
Kamal Uddin, a resident of Niamatpur village, said: “Expenses go up a lot during Ramadan. It’s not possible to buy milk at market prices. J.C. Farm has been providing milk at 10 taka, so at least I was able to get milk for my family for sehri.”
Hosain Mohammad Riyad, managing director of J.C. Agro Farm, said: “Demand for milk rises during the month of fasting, but many people can’t afford it at high prices. With them in mind, we sold milk at a nominal 10 taka per kilo.”
He said the farm plans to sell about 2 tonnes of milk at 10 taka per kilogram over the full month, benefiting more than 90 to 100 people directly each day on average.
Local residents said such a humane initiative in this period of rising prices conveys not just financial support, but also a message of empathy in society. The initiative to stand by the poor in the spirit of Ramadan has drawn wide praise in the area.
