AGAILJHARA, Bangladesh — The retail price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in this Barishal upazila rose by 400 taka in a single day, dealers said. Cylinders that retailers sold for 1,580 to 1,600 taka throughout Wednesday were selling Thursday for 2,000 taka.
Zakir Hossain Manik Molla, the Delta Gas dealer at the upazila’s Goila Bazar, said: “We previously bought 12-kg cylinders for 1,380 taka. Today we are having to buy that same gas from the company for 1,730 taka. But in the retail market, some sellers are selling it for 2,000 taka in pursuit of higher profits.”
Habibur Rahman, a customer at the shop, said that although the government has not raised gas prices, traders have raised them through a syndicate, putting the cost beyond the reach of ordinary people.
Majnu Mia, a trader at the upazila bazar, said: “The companies have suddenly raised gas prices, so we too have to sell gas at higher prices.”
Kajal Das Gupta, president of the upazila NGO coordination council, said the administration should take strict action against traders who have raised gas prices through a syndicate.
