KURIGRAM — A jewelry shop in Bhurungamari upazila was attacked and vandalized on Thursday, with the owner saying about 12 bhori of gold ornaments were stolen, police said. The incident occurred around midday on April 2 in the Bhurungamari bazaar area.
Gopal Chandra Prasad, the owner of The New Chitrarekha Jewellers, said Subal, Tapas, Parimal, Taranikanta, Santosh, Samar, Lakshman, Sukumar and about 100 unidentified people attacked and vandalized his store. He said they took about 12 bhori of gold ornaments worth approximately 2.8 million taka. Gopal said his older brother, Krishna Chandra Prasad, was also beaten, and that the store’s CCTV equipment was removed to destroy evidence. The matter has been reported to the police station, and officers visited the scene.
Madhu Mohan Prasad, president of the Bhurungamari Jewelers Association and convener of the Hindu Welfare Front’s police station unit, said a dispute had been ongoing between two sides and that the parties had been trying to settle it through discussion. The attack on the jewelry shop occurred before any settlement could be reached, he said. All jewelry shops in the upazila have been closed in protest, and the association is demanding justice.
Al-Amin, an employee at the store, said 100 to 150 people came and attacked the shop and beat the owner’s older brother.
Santosh Kumar Ray, one of the accused, denied the allegations. He said no attack was carried out by their side, and instead accused the shop owners of carrying out the vandalism.
Azim Uddin, the officer-in-charge of Bhurungamari police station, said a clash broke out between the two sides over a minor matter. If a complaint is received, legal action will be taken, he said.
