KURIGRAM — The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has demanded the removal of Kurigram police superintendent Mahfuzur Rahman, accusing him of “fascist” behavior after one of the group’s student representatives was arrested in a case stemming from an Eid-night incident in Rajibpur upazila.
The statement, signed by Lokman Hossain, secretary of the district committee’s office cell, was issued on Tuesday night, April 1, the group said.
Abdul Aziz Nahid, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s Kurigram district committee, confirmed the statement. “We have protested the SP’s fascist behavior and demanded his removal,” he said.
According to reports, a local businessman on Tuesday filed a case at the local police station naming four people, including Mehedi Hasan, a student representative of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Rajibpur upazila. The complaint accused Mehedi and his associates of attempting to abduct and molest several people, including the businessman’s daughter and son-in-law. Police later arrested Mehedi.
Rabiul Islam Rabin, a Rajibpur resident and an organizer of the district committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said several young men and two young women were riding in an auto-rickshaw on Eid night. The student representative stopped the vehicle and asked the passengers to identify themselves and state their destination because he was concerned about the safety of the young women, Rabin said, adding that the student representative did not know that the group included a married couple.
Mahfuzur Rahman, the police superintendent, did not answer calls to his mobile phone, and he did not respond to a message sent to his WhatsApp number seeking comment.
