ISTANBUL — A heavy gunfight broke out Tuesday morning outside the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Turkey’s commercial capital, leaving three suspected attackers dead, international news outlets reported, citing Turkish media and government sources.

Turkish state broadcasters said gunfire suddenly erupted near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul’s Levent district. Two police officers on duty were seriously wounded. Turkish security forces responded immediately, and return fire killed or “neutralized” the three attackers at the scene.

Footage aired by the Turkish channel Habertürk showed a large number of police, including special units, surrounding the consulate building. The entire area has been cordoned off and public access has been blocked.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The wounded officers were taken to a nearby hospital, where their condition was reported as critical. Security has been tightened across Istanbul following the incident.

The attack has raised concerns internationally amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Turkish authorities said a high-level investigation is underway to determine whether it was a planned terrorist attack.
