WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz is running out. Just hours before the deadline expired, Trump issued a new warning to Iran.
On Tuesday, April 7, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social: “Tonight an entire civilization will be destroyed, and it will never return.”
Trump said: “I don’t want this to happen, but it probably will. Now that I’ve seen complete and total regime change, where different, more rational and less aggressive thinkers gain prominence, perhaps something good can happen.”
He added: “Who knows? We may know tonight — this is one of the most important moments in the world’s long and complex history. Forty-seven years of illegal tyranny, corruption and death will end. God bless the great Iranian people!”
On Sunday, Trump warned Iran that Tuesday would be “power plant day” and “bridge day.” He set the deadline as “Tuesday, 8 p.m.” (U.S. time). That is 6 a.m. Wednesday Bangladesh time.
Trump had said the previous day that if Tehran failed to reach an agreement on opening the Strait of Hormuz by the set deadline, he would “wipe out” Iran “in one night.” He said that night could be Tuesday night.
