SUNAMGANJ — Two staff of the Sunamganj district commissioner’s office were killed Saturday when their motorcycle collided with a car on the Sunamganj-Sylhet regional highway, police said.
The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. at Joikolosh in Shantiganj upazila on Sept. 13, police said.
The dead were identified as Chamirul Haque Jewel, 38, son of freedom fighter Abdul Wahid of Sauderganw Ambari village in Doarabazar upazila, and Chabdar Ali, 37, son of the late Abdur Razzak of the Hachannagar area of Sunamganj sadar upazila. Both worked as process servers at the district commissioner’s office and were traveling to Jagannathpur carrying government mail when the crash occurred.
Jewel, who was driving the motorcycle, died at the scene, police said. Ali was seriously injured and taken first to Sunamganj sadar hospital. Doctors there transferred him to Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital, but he died on the way, hospital officials said.
“One died on the spot, and the other died on the way to Sylhet after being sent in critical condition,” said Rafiqul Islam, a resident physician at Sunamganj sadar hospital.
Suman Kumar Chowdhury, officer in charge of Joikolosh highway police, said officers reached the scene immediately after being notified. “The bodies have been sent to the Sunamganj sadar hospital morgue for autopsy,” he said.
Shahinur Rahman, an administrative officer at the district commissioner’s office, said both men worked as process servers at the office and were carrying government mail to Jagannathpur when the crash occurred. Their families have been notified, he said.
