Lifestyle Desk — Treating burn patients often requires large quantities of blood, posing a significant challenge for both families and hospitals. Many people are curious about why burn victims need so much blood. The reasons lie in how severe burns affect the body.

Burn injuries are extremely serious and have widespread negative effects on organs throughout the body. They trigger complex physiological changes, one of the most important being heavy loss of blood and fluids.

Key reasons blood is needed:

Plasma and fluid loss: Burns damage blood vessels in the skin, making them leaky. Plasma quickly seeps out of cells and accumulates at the burn site. The fluid loss can be so severe that it sharply reduces blood volume in the vessels, a condition known as hypovolemia. Managing it requires large quantities of fluids such as saline, along with plasma or blood.

Damage to blood cells: High temperatures can directly damage blood cells, especially red blood cells, which carry oxygen. When red cells are destroyed, oxygen supply to organs drops sharply, impairing their function. Fresh blood or packed red blood cells are then required.

Infection and tissue necrosis: After a burn, the skin loses its protective barrier, leaving the body vulnerable to infection. Severe infections prevent the body from rapidly producing new blood and damage existing cells. When burned tissue dies, the body uses blood to clear the dead tissue, increasing demand further.

Surgery and dressings: Burn patients often require multiple surgeries, including debridement to remove dead tissue and skin grafting. Each procedure causes blood loss. Routine dressing changes can also cause some bleeding, raising blood needs over time.

Anemia: Long-term inflammation, poor nutrition and repeated bleeding can leave burn patients anemic, requiring regular blood transfusions.

The role of blood in treatment:

Blood is critical for stabilizing burn patients and saving their lives. Proper and timely delivery of blood and fluids can help prevent shock, kidney failure and other serious complications. Doctors determine the amount of blood needed based on burn severity, the total body surface area burned, the patient’s age and other physical conditions.

For this reason, blood donation drives are vital in caring for burn patients. Raising public awareness and encouraging donations play a crucial role in saving the lives of these severely ill patients.
