DHAKA — The government has decided to transfer Nagad, the mobile financial services platform operated by the Bangladesh Post Office, to the private sector, Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur said Wednesday.
A notice seeking investors for the platform will be issued within a week, Mansur said.
The governor was the chief guest at the Cashless Bangladesh Summit 2025, jointly organized by the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh and Mastercard at the Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on Aug. 27.
“Speaking about mobile financial services, I have to say that, unfortunately, we still have only one large player,” Mansur said. “We need to create more activity, competition and new investment in this sector. That is why the decision has been made to hand Nagad over to the private sector and bring in investment.”
Nagad will be removed from the postal department’s control, the governor said. He added that the department currently lacks the capacity to operate the service and that a technology company must be brought in as the lead shareholder.
Major reforms have already been carried out at Nagad, Mansur said. Various irregularities tied to the previous owners have been resolved, about 15 million fake or inactive accounts have been deleted, and the platform is on the path to restructuring.
Stressing the need for a strategic investor in the technology sector, Mansur said: “We now need a company like bKash that can invest in Nagad in stages, share by share. We hope it will be possible to revive Nagad as a worthy competitor.”
Other speakers at the event included National Board of Revenue Chairman Md. Abdur Rahman Khan, Finance Secretary Khairuzzaman Majumder, and City Bank PLC Managing Director and CEO Masrur Arefin.
