DHAKA — The government has issued no directive to deploy the army for upcoming central student council elections at universities, the military’s public relations wing said Thursday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations directorate (ISPR) said in a news release that reports circulating in the media and on social platforms about deploying the Bangladesh Army for the elections had come to the army’s attention.

“On this matter, it is being clarified that no directive has been given by the government to the Bangladesh Army to perform duties in these elections. There is no scope for involvement in any such duty in the future,” the statement said.

The Bangladesh Army believes the central student council elections will be conducted peacefully and in a festive atmosphere, with the direct cooperation of the existing law enforcement agencies and under the overall supervision of university administrations, the statement added.
