DHAKA — Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, an additional commissioner of police, has been appointed head of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), filling a post that had been vacant for four and a half months.
The appointment was made in an order signed by DMP commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
Shafiqul Islam is a member of the 18th BCS batch of police cadres. He previously served as deputy inspector general (DIG) with the Highway Police.
The post of DB chief had been vacant since April 12, when the previous chief, Rezaul Karim Mallick, was transferred to serve as DIG of Dhaka Range. A joint commissioner had been in charge of the unit since then.
Shafiqul Islam is from Sariakandi upazila in Bogura. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rajshahi University before joining the 18th BCS police cadre in 1999.
He began his career as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Lakshmipur and later served as an assistant commissioner (AC) in the Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
