CHUADANGA — Residents of Chuadanga staged a human-chain protest demanding the withdrawal of the appointment of Goutam Kumar Biswas, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Mirpur Zone, as the district’s police superintendent.
The protest was held Sunday morning in front of the Chuadanga Press Club under the banner of Chuadanga residents. Leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, AB Party and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement took part.
Speakers at the human chain said the newly appointed police superintendent, Goutam Kumar Biswas, is identified as an ally of the former Awami League regime.
While serving in Pabna and Dhaka, he subjected ordinary people to various forms of oppression and torture, the speakers said. He is also accused of attacking ordinary students during the July movement, they added.
The people of Chuadanga will not accept such a police officer, they said. Chuadanga residents do not want any fascist; they want a humane police superintendent, they said, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the appointment.
On Sept. 11, a notification appointed Goutam Kumar Biswas, deputy commissioner of DMP’s Mirpur Zone, as Chuadanga’s police superintendent.
