KHAGRACHHARI — A medical exam found no evidence of rape in the case of a Marma teen in Khagrachhari, where allegations of sexual assault have triggered tensions and violence, officials said. Each of the 10 indicators tested in the medical report was marked “normal.”
The rape allegation set off widespread protests, blockades and violence in Khagrachhari. Three people were killed by gunfire in Guimara during the imposition of Section 144.
A medical team comprising gynecologist Dr. Joya Chakma, Dr. Mir Mosharraf Hossain and Dr. Nahid Akhtar at Khagrachhari Modern Sadar Hospital conducted the examination. Dr. Joya Chakma, senior consultant for gynecology at the hospital and head of the medical team, said, “The medical examination of the student found no evidence of rape. We conducted every type of test.”
Khagrachhari Police Superintendent Arefin Jewel said, “We received the report on Tuesday. No evidence of rape was found.” He described the violence that spread in Khagrachhari from the rape allegation as “planned,” saying, “Three lives were lost in planned violence, which is very tragic.”
On Sept. 23 around 9 p.m., a teen returning home from private tutoring in Singinala, Khagrachhari Sadar, was reportedly subjected to a gang rape. She was later found unconscious in a field around 11 p.m. that night by her relatives and admitted to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital. Police arrested a young man named Shayan Shil, 19, on charges of involvement in the case.
The incident sparked widespread protests and tensions in Khagrachhari that eventually turned violent. Section 144 was imposed and additional army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control. Despite this, tensions did not subside, and three people were killed in Guimara within the area under Section 144.
Meanwhile, the Khagrachhari district administration formed a five-member committee on Sunday to investigate the Guimara violence stemming from the protests and unrest over the alleged rape of the Marma student. Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandaker confirmed the development on Tuesday afternoon during a visit to the affected area in Guimara.
