Five arrested in Rajbari police attack, including Chhatra League leader

RAJBARI — A joint force has arrested a Chhatra League leader and four others in connection with an attack on police and vandalism of police vehicles in Goalanda, Rajbari. They were arrested Saturday night from various areas of Rajbari, the additional police superintendent of Rajbari confirmed.

Those arrested are Hiru Mridha, general secretary of Goalanda Upazila Swechchhasebak League; Masud Mridha, vice-president of Ujanchar Union Chhatra League; Shafin Sardar; Enamul Haque Joni; and Kazi Apu.

Earlier, during an attack on the shrine of Nurul Haque, also known as Nural Pagal, in Goalanda, attackers vandalized police vehicles.

In connection with the incident, sub-inspector Selim Molla of Goalanda Ghat Police Station filed a case Friday night naming 3,000 to 3,500 unidentified people as accused.

Sub-inspector Selim Molla filed the case at Goalanda Ghat Police Station as plaintiff. Following the attack, arson and exhumation and burning of the body at the shrine of Nurul Haque, also known as Nural Pagal, the situation is currently normal.

On Friday, Sept. 5, after Jumma prayers, an angry mob set fire to and vandalized the shrine of Nural Pagal in Ward 5 of Goalanda municipality in Rajbari. In a clash with Nural Pagal’s followers, one person was killed and more than 100 from both sides were injured.

When police tried to bring the situation under control, they were attacked and their vehicles vandalized. Between 10 and 12 police personnel were injured. The attackers later exhumed Nural Pagal’s body from his grave and burned it.
