SHERPUR — Border Guard Bangladesh detained 24 people, including two members of a trafficking ring, on the Sherpur border as they were being smuggled into India through illegal routes with the help of brokers. Fourteen mobile phones, a wristwatch and 54,000 taka in cash were seized from them.

They were detained at dawn Tuesday, Oct. 7, near border pillar 1110/MP at Shalbagan, next to the Holdigram Border Outpost in Sherpur’s Jhinaigati upazila.

BGB sources said BGB carried out a special operation early Tuesday in the border area of the Holdigram Border Outpost in Jhinaigati upazila. A total of 24 people being transported in four CNG-run auto-rickshaws were detained. The detainees later said they had paid 5,000 taka each under an agreement with two Sherpur brokers to be taken to India illegally. All those detained are Bangladeshi citizens and permanent residents of Rajshahi, Natore, Chapainawabganj and Sherpur districts. Fourteen mobile phones, a wristwatch and 54,000 taka in cash were seized at the time of their detention.

Lt. Col. Md. Mehedi Hasan, commanding officer of the Mymensingh Battalion (39 BGB), said the detainees had planned to enter India illegally and work in Chennai as masons and laborers. A case has been filed at Jhinaigati police station against the two human traffickers under the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act 2012.
