DHAKA — Six teachers have fallen ill during a hunger strike by MPO-listed private institution teachers demanding higher housing allowances and other benefits, organizers said.
The teachers are receiving medical treatment. Adnan Habibur Rahman, central general secretary of the Third-Class Employees Council, gave the update Tuesday morning. On Monday, Principal Delawar Hossain Azizi, president of the MPO-Listed Education Nationalization Aspirant Alliance and member-secretary of the Bangladesh Madrasa Teachers and Employees Forum, reported that four teachers had fallen ill.
For several days, teachers have been camped at the Central Shaheed Minar demanding a notification for a 20% housing allowance, a 1,500-taka medical allowance and a 75% festival allowance for employees. As part of the continuing protest, teachers marched toward the Education Building on Sunday carrying plates and bowls in a hunger procession.
The government has decided to grant MPO-listed teachers and employees a housing allowance of 5% of basic salary, with a minimum of 2,000 taka. The Finance Ministry gave its consent Sunday and sent letters to the secretaries of the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the Technical and Madrasa Education Division of the Education Ministry.
As part of the ongoing movement, teachers will hold a sit-in at Shahbagh at noon Tuesday with black cloths tied across their mouths, organizers announced Monday afternoon.
