RAJSHAHI — Police arrested a man suspected of smuggling gold to India in Godagari of Rajshahi, officials said.
The suspect was arrested at about 7:30 p.m. Monday during a raid in the Hatpara Ghat area of Godagari municipality. Police seized 294.13 grams of gold from him.
The arrested man, Md. Mosharaf Hossain, 20, is the son of Md. Naimul Islam of Bakchar village in Char Alatuli union of Chapainawabganj sadar.
Moazzem Hossain, inspector (investigation) of Godagari Model Police Station, confirmed the information.
He said a special police team conducted the operation Monday based on a tip-off. When Mosharaf sensed the police presence and tried to flee, he was detained on the spot. Police recovered cut pieces of five gold bars from him. The recovered gold weighs 294.13 grams, with an estimated market value of about 54.81 lakh taka (about $45,000).
He said Mosharaf told initial interrogators that he had been collecting gold from various districts with help from fugitives Dablu and Jahid and two or three others to prepare for smuggling to India. A case has been filed against him and the recovered gold under the Special Powers Act.
The officer-in-charge said the seizure may be part of an international gold smuggling ring. The matter is under investigation, and operations are underway to arrest the fugitive associates.
