DHAKA — The decision on a new pay commission for government employees will be taken by the next elected government, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said Sunday.

Ahmed spoke to reporters after meetings of the cabinet committees on government purchases and on economic affairs at the Secretariat.

“We cannot say anything about the pay commission at this moment. The matter depends on the decision of the next government,” he said after the meetings at the Cabinet Building. “However, we have taken the initiative and the preliminary work has begun. The next government can implement it if it chooses to.”

The pay commission was formed on July 24 to set a new salary structure for government officers and employees. It is led by Zakir Ahmed Khan, a former finance secretary and chairman of the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation. The commission has been asked to submit its report within six months.

The commission will evaluate the salaries, allowances and other benefits of employees of government, semi-government and autonomous bodies, state-owned banks and financial institutions, recognized universities, and state-owned industrial corporations under the national pay scale.

Government officers and employees currently receive salaries under the 2015 pay scale. There are about 1.5 million government employees.

High inflation has persisted in the country for more than two years, eroding real incomes. The new pay commission was formed against that backdrop to determine a new salary structure.
