DHAKA — The interim government has formed the National Pay Commission to announce a new pay scale, but will not itself take the decision, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said Sunday. The decision on a new pay scale will be taken by the next elected government, he said.
Ahmed spoke to reporters after meetings of the cabinet committees on government purchases and on economic affairs at the Secretariat.
The pay commission has already drawn up various recommendations, sources said, but the interim government will not take the pay scale decision. That decision is being left for the elected government.
“We have formed a committee on tax matters with some independent economists. They will make some recommendations,” Ahmed said. “There is the matter of a pay commission. We cannot say anything about that now. Let us see how far it goes. The next government may take it forward, since we have initiated the work.”
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has announced that elections will be held in the first half of February. Several political parties have already begun announcing their candidates. The elected government, after the 13th national election in the first half of February, will decide on the pay scale.
The National Pay Commission is aiming to submit its final recommendations to the government by December, sources said. The recommendations will be implemented by the elected government.
