NEW DELHI — At least eight people were killed and 11 injured in a powerful explosion near the Red Fort metro station in India’s capital, police spokesman Sanjay Tyagi said Monday.
Local media video showed multiple vehicles on fire and smoke billowing from a congested street near the Delhi metro station.
The exact cause of the vehicle explosion near the Red Fort was not yet known and an investigation was underway, Tyagi said.
Delhi’s deputy fire chief said at least six vehicles and three auto-rickshaws caught fire. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control, he said.
Local media reported at least 11 people were injured in the blast.
“We heard a loud sound, and our windows shook,” one resident, who asked not to be named, told NDTV.
Authorities have placed Delhi on high alert following the explosion.
