WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will meet Friday in the Oval Office, ending months of public feuding, The Guardian reported.

Trump confirmed the long-awaited meeting in a social media post Wednesday night, saying he had requested the meeting himself. He said further details would be released later.

Dora Pekec, a spokesperson for Mamdani, said it was a customary practice for a mayor-elect to meet the U.S. president. She said the mayor-elect would discuss public safety, economic security and the cost of living with Trump.

Trump has spent months attacking Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and claiming that New York would be destroyed if the democratic socialist were elected. The president had also threatened to deport Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and is a U.S. citizen, and said he would cut federal funding to New York City.

Trump’s tone has shifted, however, since Republican losses in November elections in Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York. He is now talking more about affordability and the cost of living, issues that had been central to the Democratic campaign. Last week he wrote that Republicans were now the “party of affordability,” while also claiming the economy was the strongest in history.

Trump told reporters on Sunday that he would sit down with Mamdani and find solutions. On Monday, Mamdani said he wanted to meet Trump and that his team had contacted the White House.

Mamdani, 34, was an obscure state lawmaker from Queens only months ago. He is now mayor-elect of the largest city in the United States. In his victory speech, he said New York could show the rest of the country how to confront the president.

After taking office in January, Mamdani has spoken of making the city “Trump-proof.” He has also said he is ready to work with Trump when necessary in the interest of New Yorkers.
