NEW DELHI — Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday, a day ahead of his scheduled visit to attend the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC), diplomatic sources said.

Khalilur was originally scheduled to travel to Delhi on Wednesday. He arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport shortly after 6:30 p.m. and was received by a senior official from India’s National Security Council Secretariat, sources said.

The seventh CSC national security advisers’ conference will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, at Hyderabad House in Delhi. Khalilur is expected to leave Delhi the same afternoon after the meeting.

On Monday, Nov. 17, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity. Hasina, who has been a fugitive since Aug. 5 last year, has been staying in the Indian capital.

Following the verdict, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has asked India to hand over Hasina. India has said it has “noted” the verdict but has remained silent on extradition. Khalilur’s early arrival comes against this backdrop.

Speculation is rife over whether Khalilur will discuss the Hasina issue with the Indian government during his stay in Delhi.
