CHUADANGA — Thirteen people were injured in two separate clashes between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists over the placement of billboards and electoral symbols in Chuadanga, police said.
The first incident happened at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Shyampur village of Alamdanga upazila in the Chuadanga-1 constituency. At least 11 people, including a woman union parishad member, were injured. Two motorcycles were also damaged. The injured were admitted to Alamdanga Upazila Health Complex and local clinics.
The injured BNP supporters included Alamdanga municipal Jubo Dal joint convenor Saiful Islam Konok; members Shahjahan and Alim; Kumari union BNP organizing secretary Taijel Hossain; Ward 1 woman UP member Roksana Khatun; and her husband Rashidul Islam. The injured on the Jamaat side were Murad Ali, son of Harun; Arif, son of Mahatab; Laltu, son of Polash; Oltu, son of Sadek Ali; and Sadek Ali’s daughter Fatema Khatun.
Alamdanga upazila BNP General Secretary Aminul Islam Rokon said, “Jubo League activists posing as Jamaat workers attacked us in a planned manner. Six of our leaders and activists were injured and are under treatment.”
Alamdanga upazila Jamaat Ameer Shafiul Alam Bakul said, “When we went to hang our scales symbol, the BNP’s woman UP member and her husband objected. Later, BNP activists attacked our homes, and the clash followed.”
Alamdanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masudur Rahman said, “On receiving the news, police went to the scene and brought the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area.”
Separately, tensions ran high between BNP and Jamaat supporters in Kamarpara village of Modna-Parkrishnapur union under Darshana Police Station in the Chuadanga-2 constituency on Tuesday afternoon over the installation of a billboard. The dispute, which began in the morning, escalated into a clash that afternoon, leaving two people injured: Jamaat supporter Khaja and BNP supporter Azizul Islam.
Darshana Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sultan Mahmud said, “A scuffle took place between Jamaat and BNP supporters over the installation of the billboard. I have heard that two people were injured. No formal complaint has been filed yet; if one is received, necessary legal action will be taken.”
