HABIGANJ — Border Guard Bangladesh seized about 5.5 crore taka (about $4.6 million) worth of Indian goods being smuggled in five sand- and stone-laden trucks in Habiganj, officials said Friday.
Lt. Col. Tanjilur Rahman, commander of BGB’s 55 Battalion, confirmed the seizure at a press briefing at the Habiganj BGB office on Friday afternoon, Nov. 21.
He said operations from Saturday through Friday morning in the Satchari area and surroundings of Chunarughat upazila led to the seizure of five trucks loaded with sand and stones, along with about 5.5 crore taka worth of Indian goods including cumin, saris and cosmetics. The smugglers fled after sensing the operation, he said.
Rahman said about 9 crore taka worth of Indian smuggled goods has been seized in various operations this month, and 37 people have been detained in recent operations.
He said BGB used advanced technology devices to identify the smugglers and seize the goods. The seized items are being processed for handover to the customs office, he added.
Rahman said such BGB operations will continue.
