One killed, 50 injured in Habiganj clash between rival groups

HABIGANJ — One person was killed and at least 50 others injured when two rival groups clashed over local dominance in Demikandi village of Kakailcheo union in Habiganj’s Ajmiriganj upazila. The deceased was identified as Rasel Mia, 48. The clash took place around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The injured include Rabbi Mia, 18; Sabbir, 21; Intaz Ali, 16; Selim, 25; Bablu, 35; Ziaur, 50; Tokdir, 28; Altu Mia, 18; Raihan, 28; Ashraf Uddin, 24; Masum, 26; Jibon, 28; and Amena Khatun, 25. They were admitted to the upazila health complex.

Police and local sources said a dispute over local dominance had been going on for a long time between the Alkuran Sowdagar faction of Anandapur village and the Hannan Mia faction of Kumedpur village. The dispute escalated recently over the formation of a Kakailcheo panchayat committee and influence over a local market. Both sides had been posting inflammatory content on social media.

Tensions spread in the area on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, both sides clashed using locally made weapons. Rasel Mia was killed and at least 50 others were injured. Police reached the scene after being informed and brought the situation under control after two hours of effort. The injured were then taken to hospital.

Avijit Pal, medical officer at the upazila health complex, said: “Rasel Mia was already dead when he was brought to the hospital. Details will be available after the autopsy.”

Md. Akbar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Ajmiriganj police station, said: “The situation is normal. One person has died at the hospital.”
