DHAKA — The society that the Prophet Muhammad built around the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina was the most just and dignified in the world, and no society based on man-made ideology can deliver the same peace or dignity, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said.
“Ninety percent of people in this country believe in Allah. They follow the Quran and accept the Prophet Muhammad as the final messenger. So, God willing, the law of this country will run on the principles of the Quran,” he said. “Until the country reaches that point, we cannot establish a humane society.”
He spoke Sunday at a national conference organized by the United Council of Imams and Khatibs at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Center in the capital. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, along with leaders of various political parties and senior religious scholars, also addressed the conference.
Responding to questions about the rights of people of other faiths under Quranic law, the Jamaat chief said the Quran grants rights not only to humans but to all of creation. “Just as people of all religions enjoyed freedom and security in Medina, those rights will be established in our country if Allah’s law is implemented,” he said.
Mosque committees should be formed in consultation with imams and khatibs, who should serve as the heart of those committees, Rahman said. Committees should be formed in cooperation with imams and khatibs, not by excluding them.
Addressing the imams and khatibs, he said: “You are our imams. We want to show you respect. Decisions in society will come from below, God willing. The day imams become the imams of society is the day we will be freed.”
