CHATTOGRAM — A major fire that broke out at a blanket and winter-clothing warehouse on the fourth floor of a five-story commercial building in the city’s Kadamtali area was brought under control after about three hours, the fire service said.
The blaze began around 1:30 p.m. Monday. Eight fire service units reached the scene one after another and worked to bring the flames under control. The fire was contained shortly after 4 p.m., after about three hours of effort.
Jamal Uddin, a shop employee on the ground floor, said: “Around 1:30 p.m. I suddenly saw smoke coming down from above. Before I could understand anything, flames were rising at the fourth-floor windows. Then everyone ran down.”
Two units from Nandankanan station reached the scene first after the alert. As the fire intensified, six more units joined them. More than 60 firefighters took part in the operation.
Mohammad Jasim Uddin, deputy director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the fire spread quickly because of flammable cloth and chemicals. “After about two and a half hours of effort, our eight units were able to bring the fire under control,” he said. “We estimate the damage will be heavy. But after the investigation, we will be able to give the exact cause and the extent of the loss.”
