CUMILLA — A child was killed when a government car belonging to the assistant commissioner (land) ran over her at an upazila administration complex in Homna on Wednesday morning, witnesses said.
Faiza Akhter died around 10:30 a.m. in front of the Tulip Administration Institute on the upazila parishad premises. Her father, Faizul Haque, works for a pharmaceutical company. The family is from Putiya Terdron in Ujirpur upazila, Barishal.
Witnesses said Faiza had come to the institute with her mother. Her older brother, Ayan, is a play-group student at the school. Faiza was playing on the road when the speeding government vehicle ran her over, killing her at the scene. Her mother and other parents present broke down in grief. The driver fled with the car after the incident.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) Ahmed Mofas and Upazila Executive Officer Md. Shahidul Islam went to Homna government hospital after receiving the news and consoled the bereaved family. Faiza’s father demanded the maximum punishment for the driver.
Md. Ibrahim, head teacher of the Tulip Administration Institute, said Faiza had come to school with her mother that morning and that her older brother attends the same institution.
Md. Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Homna police station, said no written complaint had been filed yet. Legal action will be taken once a complaint is received, he said.
Ahmed Mofas, the assistant commissioner, said the child could have been his own. He was not in the car at the time, he said, and went to the hospital as soon as he heard. “I will do whatever is needed for justice,” he said.
