BARURA, Bangladesh — A man in Cumilla’s Barura upazila has been accused of slaughtering jackals and selling their meat in a public market on claims of medicinal value, residents said.
Shamim Hossain, 28, was last seen selling jackal meat on Saturday afternoon, March 31, at the Adda Bazar in the upazila. Sellers cited what they called various health benefits and were charging 2,000 taka a kilogram, witnesses said.
The seller and local sources said the jackal had been slaughtered near the Rajghat bridge, close to the Adda Bazar. About 2 kg of the meat was sold at the market, and the rest was taken to the nearby Bagmara bazar, they said.
Buyers who asked not to be identified said the sellers told them that jackal meat, cooked and eaten, was an unfailing remedy for rheumatic pain and other serious illnesses. They said they had bought the meat believing those claims.
Local traders said jackal meat is sold there regularly, with no fixed seller. “Different people come and sell it at different times,” one said.
Adda union council chairman Zaker Hossain Badal said the union office sits right next to the market, but he had never seen jackal meat being sold there. “No one has ever complained to me,” he said.
