Man arrested in Bandarban on charge of assaulting widow

BANDARBAN — Police in Bandarban’s Rowangchhari upazila arrested a 35-year-old man on charges of sexually assaulting a widow at her home, an officer said.

The suspect, Rupam Kanti Tanchangya, son of Kala Peda Tanchangya of Wagai Para, was detained about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, in Nating Jhiri Punarbasan Para in Ward 9 of Union No. 3, Alekkhyong, according to police and local sources.

The widow’s husband had died unexpectedly three months earlier, and she had been living in Nating Jhiri Punarbasan Para with her mother-in-law and two children, sources said. Tanchangya entered her home at night and attempted to assault her. Neighbors who heard her cries seized him at the scene and handed him to Rowangchhari police.

Subhra Mukul, a sub-inspector at Rowangchhari police station, confirmed the incident and said a case had been filed against Tanchangya under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He was sent to court about 11 a.m. Thursday.
