NAIKHONGCHHARI — Border Guard Bangladesh has seized 9,850 yaba pills worth about 2.96 million taka during a patrol in a remote hill area along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, officials said.
The Naikhongchhari battalion (11 BGB), part of the Ramu sector under the Cox’s Bazar region, has long played a role in border security, smuggling and drug interdiction, and curbing illegal crossings through regular patrols in rugged hill areas along the Naf River.
Acting on intelligence, a special patrol from the battalion headquarters seized 9,850 pieces of Burmese yaba abandoned along a hill path in the Boro Jamchhari area around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, officials said. The seizure was valued at 2.955 million taka.
According to BGB, the patrol launched the operation after spotting suspicious movement in the border area near Boro Jamchhari. Drug smugglers dropped the bag of yaba and fled into the hill underbrush when they detected the patrol. Officers later searched the area and recovered the pills.
Lt. Col. S.K.M. Kafil Uddin Kayes, commander of the Naikhongchhari battalion (11 BGB), said the force remained on high alert against drug trafficking in border areas. “Our patrol teams regularly conduct intelligence surveillance and special operations in high-risk locations,” he said. The recovered yaba has been stored at battalion headquarters and is being prepared for further legal proceedings, he said.
