BANDARBAN — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has opened a primary school for a remote community in Bulu Para village in the Remakri union of Bandarban’s Thanchi upazila, the unit said.

The school, built by the Alikadam Battalion (57 BGB), was inaugurated by the battalion’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. Abdullah Al Mehedi. After the opening, he handed out books, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers and other school supplies, along with chocolates and biscuits, to about 50 students.

Mehedi said the Alikadam Battalion, responsible for the remote hill border of the southeast, works on the socioeconomic development of indigenous and Bengali communities alongside its border-security duties. Under “Operation Uttoron,” the battalion provides medical care, distributes food and clothing, hands out winter clothes and offers relief to those affected by fires and floods, he said, adding that the work helps maintain peace in the hills.

He said the school was set up so that children of remote border communities could receive an education, and that the unit’s humanitarian and social work would continue.

Local sources said the new school will provide schooling to 70 to 80 children from about 50 families in three hamlets in the Bulu Para area, opening new possibilities for children who have long been outside the education system.

Local residents, public representatives, parents, traditional leaders and headmen called the initiative timely and thanked the BGB, saying the force in the remote hills serves not only as a security agency but also as a reliable partner in humanitarian and development work. BGB members of various ranks, local traditional leaders, parents and dignitaries attended the opening.
