BANCHARAMPUR, Brahmanbaria — The 6th Historic Sunni Mahasammelan was held Wednesday in the Daridoulot Dakshin Kandapara area of Bancharampur upazila, organized by a local youth group.

The religious gathering took place on Dec. 17, 2025, at the Balur Maath ground in Daridoulot. Krishibid Mehedi Hasan Polash, joint general secretary of the central Krishak Dal and president of the Bancharampur upazila BNP, attended as chief guest.

“For the past 15-16 years, there were various restrictions on religious discussion or Islamic conferences in the country,” Polash said. “But after the fall of the fascist government on Aug. 5, a new sun of religious freedom has risen in Bangladesh. The fact that we can hear religious discussion in an open environment today has been made possible by the tears and sacrifice of the ulema.”

He accused the previous government of widespread repression. “The past fascist Hasina government carried out repression against the ulema in every village of the country,” he said. “What khutbas the ulema would deliver from the mosque pulpit used to be handed to them in writing. But today the ulema can speak freely in the light of the Quran and Sunnah.”

Polash also urged the youth at the gathering to stand against narcotics. “We must take a vow that we will stay free of drugs, will not tolerate drugs, will not consume them ourselves and will not let anyone sell them,” he said. “Wherever there are drugs, the youth must stand up against them.”

Special guests included Advocate Abdullah Al Mohsin, joint legal affairs secretary of the Brahmanbaria district BNP, and S.H.Z. Shukuri Selim Chisti, organizing secretary of the Bancharampur upazila BNP. Invited guests included Abul Kalam, joint student affairs secretary of the upazila BNP; Mahmudul Hasan Nasir, former joint secretary of the Brahmanbaria district Chhatra Dal; and A.B.M. Ali Kawsar (Jaman).
