NAOGAON — Police detained four people in a district-wide crackdown on narcotics in Naogaon and seized 45 kg of cannabis along with other illegal drugs, officials said Sunday.

Police Superintendent Mohammad Tariqul Islam has led successive operations against drug traffickers since taking charge of the district, and also against debt collectors, officials said. Crackdowns are taking place in one upazila or another every day.

As part of the continuing drive, officers from the district police and the Detective Branch (DB) conducted a joint raid Sunday morning in the Suipara colony area of the city, known locally as the “akhra” of the drug trade. They seized 45 kg of cannabis along with large quantities of local liquor and equipment used in selling narcotics.

Two people were detained during the operation on charges of involvement in the drug trade, and cases have been filed against them under the Narcotics Control Act, police said.

Separately, police detained Abdullah, 24, son of the late Wahed Ali from Kadamtala Baraputa village in Jashore’s Sharsha upazila. Jalil Mondal, 50, son of the late Abbas Mondal from Lakkhikul village in Naogaon’s Badalgachhi upazila, was detained on charges of aiding him.

The police superintendent said Naogaon district borders India, making it a preferred route for drug traffickers. “Drug trafficking in this region has risen somewhat recently. Compared with earlier, Naogaon district police are now constantly vigilant against drug traffickers,” he said.

He said further such operations would be conducted across the district in the coming days.
