PABNA — Two Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidates submitted their nomination papers Thursday for parliamentary seats in Pabna district, party officials said.
Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, the BNP chairperson’s special assistant and chief coordinator of the central Workers Party, picked up nomination papers for the Pabna-5 (Sadar) seat. Habibur Rahman Habib, an adviser to the BNP chairperson and convener of the Pabna district BNP, collected his papers for the Pabna-4 (Ishwardi-Atgharia) seat.
Biswas submitted his papers at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, to District Administrator and Returning Officer Shahed Mostafa.
Speaking to reporters after collecting the papers, Biswas said voting rights were not ensured in the previous election. The BNP is expecting a free election this time, he said, and called on voters to back the party’s sheaf-of-paddy symbol to build a corruption-free and safe Bangladesh. He also asked for prayers for the recovery of Begum Khaleda Zia.
Those present included former district BNP president Advocate Mirza Azizur Rahman, joint convener Abdus Samad Khan Montu, member secretary Advocate Masud Khondoker, district BNP senior leaders Abdullah Al Mahmud Mannan, K.M. Musa, Towfiq Habib, Siddiqur Rahman Siddique, Nur Masum Baga, Rehanul Islam Bulal, district Jubo Dal convener Himel Rana and former office secretary Jahurul Islam.
Earlier Thursday morning, BNP leaders and activists collected nomination papers on behalf of Habibur Rahman Habib for the Pabna-4 (Ishwardi-Atgharia) seat.
Local BNP leaders and activists collected the papers from Ishwardi upazila assistant returning officer’s office, taking them from Assistant Commissioner (Land) Asaduzzaman Sarkar and upazila Election Officer Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan.
Those present included former upazila BNP convener Ziaul Islam Sontu Sardar, former member secretary lecturer Ajmal Hossain Sujan, former pourashava BNP organizational secretary Ajmal Hossain Dablu, former Ishwardi upazila Chhatra Dal general secretary Mahbuburor Rahman Palash, former upazila Jubo Dal general secretary Shariful Islam Tuhin, former upazila BNP vice president Atiar Rahman, upazila Jubo Dal member secretary Rafiqul Islam Roki, and former upazila Chhatra Dal president Rezaul Karim Shaheen.
