SIRAJGANJ, Bangladesh — A pregnant housewife was seriously injured after being attacked with sharp weapons over a land dispute in Choubari Paschimpara of Raydaulatpur union in Kamarkhanda upazila of Sirajganj district, officials said. She is being treated at a hospital.
The injured woman was identified as Mst. Dola Khatun, 25, the wife of Md. Asik Molla of the area. The incident took place at about 11 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 23) near the house of Rafique Molla.
According to local sources, neighbor Laili Begum, Polash, Poli, Sumaiya and several others struck Dola with daggers, vegetable knives and clubs over a long-running land dispute, seriously injuring her. No one else was at home at the time, and she was attacked while alone, sources said.
Sources also said that, before the attack, Dola’s youngest son had gone to a neighbor’s house to gather plums, which led to an argument. The attack followed from that dispute. Dola is three months pregnant, local people said.
Local residents rescued her and took her to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
Asked about the allegation, the accused, Laili Begum, said: “At about 9:30 a.m., Asik Molla and the people of his house assaulted us. Later, at about 11 a.m., my daughter went and struck Dola.”
Shahidul Islam, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kamarkhanda police station, said: “We have not received any written complaint about this incident so far. If a complaint is received, we will investigate and take necessary action under the law.”
