SHAHJADPUR — Naval police recovered the body of Hafizul Islam Hafiz, 30, a member of the Ganaadhikar Parishad, from a dredger by the Jamuna River in Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj, officials said.
The body was recovered around 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, from the Paramohanpur area of Jalalpur union in the upazila. Since the family filed no complaint, the body is being handed over to relatives without an autopsy.
Hafizul Islam was the son of the late Kamal Munshi of Baikhola village in Jalalpur union of the upazila. Locals said he was a member of the Ganaadhikar Parishad.
According to local sources, a sand business had been operating next to a river-protection embankment in the Arkandi and Paramohanpur areas of the Jamuna River. Hafizul Islam was also involved in the work. On Sunday night, he was sleeping in the engine room of a dredger’s barge with four companions. His death came to light around noon Monday, after which Enayetpur police station officers and Chauhali naval police reached the scene and recovered the body.
Local resident Jamal Pramanik said Hafizul Islam had worked in Dhaka after losing his home to river erosion. He returned to the area a few months ago and joined the sand business. He identified himself as a member of the Ganaadhikar Parishad.
Chauhali naval police outpost in-charge Firoz Uddin said, “No marks of injury were found on the body. Since the family filed no complaint, the body is being handed over to relatives after completing legal formalities.”
