Murder case filed over Chowgacha mob beating death, one held

Mizanur Rahman, 36, was killed in a mob beating in Chowgacha, Jashore on suspicion of being a cattle thief. His elder brother Sarwar Hussain has filed a murder case at Chowgacha Police Station over the incident, and police have arrested one man, Shafiqul Islam, 22. Shafiqul is the son of Idris Ali of Baghardari village in Chowgacha upazila.

Police station sources said villagers beat a man to death on suspicion of cattle theft at about 3:30am on Sunday night in Baghardari village in Swarupdaha union of the upazila. On Tuesday the dead man’s elder brother, Sarwar Hussain, filed a murder case at Chowgacha Police Station against unnamed people.

It is learned that late on the night of the incident three thieves were trying to break the lock of the cowshed of Idris Ali in Baghardari village. Sensing this, Idris Ali and his son Shafiqul Islam shouted, and villagers chased the thieves. Two managed to escape but the villagers caught one. Mizanur Rahman was critically injured in the indiscriminate beating by villagers. At one point some people from the village rescued the injured Mizanur and admitted him to Chowgacha hospital, where he died while under treatment.

Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Chowgacha Police Station, confirmed the incident and said the dead man’s elder brother had filed a murder case and one person had been taken into police custody.
