The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has fined Dhaka Biryani House in the centre of Chuadanga town Tk 20,000 for storing and selling food in unhygienic conditions and keeping stale food to serve.

The fine was imposed during a drive in the Sadar Hospital Road area on Monday (26 October).

According to the directorate’s Chuadanga district office, a market monitoring drive was carried out on College Road, Hospital Road and Shahid Abul Kashem Road from 10:30am to 1pm on Monday, checking businesses including gas sellers, pharmacies, food shops and laundries.

At Dhaka Biryani House, officials found raw and cooked meat stored in an open fridge in highly unhygienic conditions, and stale food kept to be served to customers. The owner, Md Abil Sharif, was fined Tk 20,000 under the relevant section of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, and the fine was collected on the spot.

As part of the drive, food sellers in front of Chuadanga Government Girls’ High School were warned to sell safe, good-quality food. Laundries were told to provide proper service. Traders were also strictly instructed to sell gas at the set price, buy and sell goods at fair prices, obtain the licences they need, and not sell expired, substandard or banned goods, medicines or baby food.

The drive was led by Mohammad Mamunul Hasan, assistant director of the directorate’s Chuadanga district office. A representative of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Md Rafiqul Islam, and a team from the district police assisted.
