The upazila administration in Durgapur, Rajshahi, has seized 20 sacks of chemical fertiliser that were being taken away to be smuggled out. A mobile court fined a van driver named Sukumar Tk 1,000 over the incident.

It happened on Monday afternoon (26 October) at Sheikher Mor in Ujankholshi in the upazila.

The seized fertiliser was 10 sacks of DAP and 10 sacks of MOP. It was later sold at the fair price to farmers who were present.

According to local sources, people in the area stopped a battery-run van carrying the 20 sacks and held the driver with the van. They informed the upazila administration, and officials went to the spot and seized the fertiliser through a mobile court. The van driver Sukumar was fined Tk 1,000.

Sukumar is the son of Sushil Chandra of Belghoria village in the upazila. He said a young man he did not know hired his van to carry the 20 sacks from the Durgapur Fire Service crossing to the three-road crossing at Taherpur Bazar. When he reached Sheikher Mor in Ujankholshi, local young men including Jewel Khairul stopped him and informed the upazila administration.

Abu Saleh, a local farmer, said farmers were not getting fertiliser properly while dishonest dealers were trying to move it elsewhere. The administration needs to watch more closely to stop this, he said.

The mobile court was run by Durgapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Umme Habiba Farzana. Rajshahi district additional deputy director Dr Md Abdul Mazid, upazila agriculture officer Sahana Parvin Laboni and others concerned were present.

UNO Umme Habiba Farzana said officials went to the spot on receiving the information and seized the fertiliser. The money from selling it will be paid into the government treasury. “Our drives against irregularities in fertiliser will continue,” she said.
