Tanmoy Kumar Mondal, sub-registrar of the Sadar sub-registry office in the heart of Khulna city, was allegedly taken away after he left his office. Deed writers, copyists and police went to the spot and began searching. About half an hour later he returned to the office by himself. It is not yet confirmed who took him.
Bahauddin, vice-president of the Sadar deed writers’ association, said Tanmoy Kumar Mondal goes to lunch between 2pm and 2:30pm every day. After he left at the usual time, they heard that someone had taken him away by rickshaw from in front of the registry office gate. Deed writers and copyists ran after them at once, and later learned that he had been taken along the road east of the office towards the river ghat. He was not found there either.
Bahauddin said a woman on the way told them Tanmoy had been taken in two rickshaws and then put on a motorcycle, and that she was pushed about when she tried to free him. They do not know who took him or how he came back.
Mohammad Faruk Hossain, an officer at the sub-registry office, said he was in his room. Going to the washroom before leaving for lunch, he heard shouting outside: “They have taken sir, sir has gone.” He then learned from people that the sub-registrar could not be found.
Khulna Sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Lokman Hossain said a call to 999 reported that the Sadar sub-registrar had been taken by someone after leaving his office. Police and a DB team went to the scene, reviewed CCTV footage, spoke to those concerned and began gathering information. About half an hour later the sub-registrar returned to the office. He told police he had had to go to a place nearby to look at a document: after he set out for lunch by rickshaw, several people took him along with them, and he was later released without being harmed.
The officer-in-charge said the sub-registrar told them he saw no weapon, and police have not seen one in the CCTV footage so far. “It all happened within 30 to 40 minutes. We are investigating the whole matter, including the CCTV footage. Whether anything else lies behind it, and what actually happened, will be found out after the investigation,” he said.
Tanmoy Kumar Mondal said: “I have come back before you in sound health. There was no recommendation or specific demand. I was asked to look at a document and say why the matter was not going ahead. The document may even belong to another office.” He said it had seemed unusual to him at first, and that he had been taken towards the riverbank.
