Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks from Yemen have all but emptied the skies over Riyadh. From 8 to 25 October, 4,071 scheduled flights at the Saudi capital’s King Khalid International Airport were cancelled.

The airport had 4,736 flights scheduled in that period, which means about 86 percent were cancelled.

Al Jazeera reported the figures on Monday (26 October), citing the latest data from the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

The Houthis have stepped up their attacks on Saudi Arabia this month, targeting the country’s airports, seaports and oil facilities.

King Khalid International, Saudi Arabia’s second-busiest airport after Jeddah’s, has been hit repeatedly. An attack on the airport on 10 October killed 13 people, the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade.

The airport had been closed since 10 October. Saudi authorities reopened it on a limited basis on Sunday.
