Experts have stressed integrated rehabilitation services to help people with stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions regain independence in daily life and take part in social activities again.

They made the call at a workshop on Wednesday in the conference room of the Super Specialised Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). The “Neuro Rehabilitation Workshop 2026” was organised by the university’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with the cooperation of Generous Co. Ltd and the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The main aims of the workshop were to share experience of treatment in neuro rehabilitation, identify ways to improve services and build effective cooperation among the institutions involved. Participants discussed the prospects for expanding modern, integrated and patient-centred rehabilitation services in Bangladesh.

BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr FM Siddiqui was chief guest. Professor Dr MA Shakoor, chairman of the university’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, presided.

Special guests were BMU pro-vice-chancellors Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam (academic), Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad (administration) and Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader (research and development); Professor Dr Taslim Uddin, former chairman of the department; Dr Valerie A Taylor, founder and coordinator of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP); and Morikawa Yoko, senior representative of JICA Bangladesh. Associate Professor Dr MAK Azad gave the welcome address, Associate Professor Dr Md Nadim Kamal, member secretary of the organising committee, moderated, and Associate Professor Dr Ziaur Rahman Chowdhury gave the vote of thanks.

Representatives of BMU, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, CRP, Continental Hospital, Aichi Healthcare Group and Generous Co. Ltd took part. The programme included an opening session, an exchange with the media and workshop sessions, which discussed existing experience in neuro rehabilitation, improving treatment and the scope for cooperation between institutions.

Experts said that after a stroke or serious neurological injury many patients need long-term support to move, carry out daily tasks and return to normal social life. Neuro rehabilitation can play an important role in using a patient’s remaining abilities, increasing independence and improving quality of life. Alongside treatment, rehabilitation plans tailored to each patient’s needs and the coordinated involvement of different health professionals are key parts of the service.

The organisers hope the workshop will widen the exchange of experience among doctors and health professionals and make coordinated rehabilitation efforts more effective, paving the way for modern, patient-centred rehabilitation services for people with neurological conditions in Bangladesh.
