The Delhi High Court has rebuked Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka for trying to enter Jantar Mantar in Delhi after the Modi government removed it from the list of designated protest sites.
“You are at the front (of the protest). When you break barricades, others may follow you. There may also be people there who are not under your control,” the court said at a hearing on Wednesday.
“The purpose of police permission for any protest is not only to stop the protesters but also to stop others, so that others cannot join the protesters and create disorder,” the court observed.
Referring to other countries, Justice Subramonium Prasad said: “We have seen this happen outside the country too. What began as a student protest later turned violent.” The court did not name any country.
On 13 October, after protests at Jantar Mantar were banned, Saurabh, Ashutosh and several CJP supporters climbed over an iron gate to get in. They carried the national flag and chanted slogans. Police detained all of them. Ashutosh and Saurabh were arrested for allegedly breaching the conditions of an earlier bond.
Ashutosh, Saurabh and CJP chief Deepak had been granted bail on condition that they would not breach the peace. The court asked why they had broken that condition.
