He left the country more than two decades ago to bring a smile to his family’s faces and in hope of better days, thinking hard work would end the household’s want. After 24 years of that struggle he has indeed returned to the land of his birth, but as a lifeless body.
This is what happened to Hasan Ali, known as Putu, son of the late Usman Gani of Kaliabakri village in Damurhuda upazila, Chuadanga.
There were heartbreaking scenes across the area when the body reached his village on Thursday. The air of Kaliabakri was heavy with relatives’ weeping, and local people came from far and near to see him one last time after so many years.
Family sources said Hasan Ali went to Africa about 24 years ago to seek his fortune. Alongside back-breaking work there, he married a local woman and started a new family; they have a child. He suffered a sudden stroke last Thursday afternoon and died before his relatives understood what was happening.
After all the legal and official formalities were completed, his body was finally brought home on Thursday, a week after his death.
His sudden death has left more than his relatives here at a loss: the future of his wife and only child, who remain far away in Africa, is now deeply uncertain.
